Royal Oldham Hospital

"Love is Everywhere"

"This commission was created to celebrate the love, dedication and compassion which resonates through the staff at the new children's wards of Oldham hospital.

The small seeds, dragon flies and butterflies are symbols of love and life. Thanks to the ladies in the sewing room, I was able to use tiny pieces of nurses old uniforms from both Rochdale and Oldham for the basis of the many elements. I have appliqued small areas of fabric, painted with delicate inks and acrylic and then embroidered each seed with a collection of both metallic and rayon threads.

In order to produce an image to represent the many people involved, I met with several members of staff who have experienced the transition from Rochdale hospital to Oldham Hospital in 2012.  It seemed to me that this difficult but necessary process has been challenging for many people and that naturally, there were mixed feelings about the closure of Rochdale Hospital. However, the one thing that struck me was the resilience, patience and tenacity of the nurses and staff and their ability to quickly form a new team. The love and loyalty of the staff, even in a chaotic and changing environment, is outstanding. It is the team that counts and this team is made up of many very caring people who do an amazing job, no matter where they work. "
